Which versions of Word can I use?

Microsoft only supports more recent versions of Word for add-ins:

  • Office 365 provides the best experience for Word add-ins (this is subscription Word)
  • Word 2019 and later support all add-in features (this is purchased Word)*
  • Word 2016 is partially supported (some features are not available)
  • Word earlier than Word 2016 is not supported

Our add-in works with both Windows and Mac computers, and no additional software is required for Mac.

*Important: Word 2019 on Mac — action required by July 13, 2026

Microsoft announced that starting July 13, 2026, Word 2019 on Mac will enter "reduced functionality mode" — meaning you can open and view files, but cannot edit or save them. This affects the Patent Bots add-in as well.

To continue using the add-in, you'll need to do one of the following:

  • Update your OS and Office apps — If your Mac supports macOS 12 (Monterey) or later, update to a supported macOS version and then update your Office apps via Help > Check for Updates in any Office app.

  • Upgrade to Microsoft 365 — A Microsoft 365 subscription gives you the latest Word version with ongoing updates and full add-in support.

  • Use a different device — If your Mac cannot run macOS 12, you can install your Office apps on a newer supported Mac or PC.

Note: Word 2019 on Mac reached end of support on October 10, 2023 and cannot be updated to resolve this issue on its own — you must update macOS first, then update Office.
