What are strict ref labels?

By default, we use "strict" ref labels, which means that we look more narrowly to reduce the number of false alarms. The most significant restriction is that we require a ref label to have at least 3 digits. You can turn off strict ref labels on your account page to have Patent Bots look more broadly and recognize the following as ref labels:

  • Two digits: 12
  • With parentheses: 101(a)
  • With a period: 101.1

Doing so may increase the number of false alarms, such as recognizing 802.11b (a common wireless networking standard) as a ref label.
