Enabling GPT
We have an option to use OpenAI's GPT to generate patent text. This feature is off by default and may only be enabled by the administrator of your Patent Bots subscription. You can see who the administrator is on our dashboard. The administrator can enable GPT for all users from the same dashboard.
Once the administrator enables GPT, all users have access. It is not possible to enable it for some users and not all users. Our GPT-based generation tools will send portions of your patent documents to OpenAI using their API.
OpenAI Terms and Security
Please review the OpenAI API data usage policies before enabling GPT in Patent Bots. You are responsible for determining if OpenAI policies meet your needs.
As of May 24, 2023, the OpenAI API data usage policies state:
- The OpenAI API is SOC 2 Type 2 compliant and has been audited by an independent third-party auditor against the 2017 Trust Services Criteria for Security.
- OpenAI will not use data submitted by customers via our API to train or improve our models, unless you explicitly decide to share your data with us for this purpose. You can opt-in to share data. [Patent Bots has not and will not opt-in.]
- Any data sent through the API will be retained for abuse and misuse monitoring purposes for a maximum of 30 days, after which it will be deleted (unless otherwise required by law).
- A limited number of authorized OpenAI employees, as well as specialized third-party contractors that are subject to confidentiality and security obligations, can access this data solely to investigate and verify suspected abuse.
OpenAI also states that its servers are currently located in the US.
For any questions about OpenAI and its policies, please contact them for further information.
Using GPT
We are using the OpenAI gpt-3.5-turbo model to generate patent text. You can access our GPT tools in the Generate tab of our drafting tools in our Word add-in. There is currently no additional charge for using GPT in Patent Bots, but that may change in the future.
Our GPT generation tool can generate three sections of your patent application: (1) Title, (2) Background, and (3) Abstract.
To use our GPT generation tools, you need to insert these placeholders in your Word document:
{{TITLE}}
{{BACKGROUND}}
{{ABSTRACT}}
We will replace these placeholders with text generated by GPT. The generation is based on claim 1, and processing takes about 30-60 seconds.
GPT is only being used, when the specific tool indicates that processing is done with GPT. If GPT is not mentioned, then we are doing the processing on our own without the use of GPT.
